Agentic AI: The Killer Use Case or the Next Narrative Trap? Franklin Templeton‘s Bet on Blockchain Micropayments

The $1.8 trillion asset manager publicly declared Agentic AI the potential "killer use case" for blockchain, citing micropayments as the bridge. The data suggests otherwise. Over the past 90 days, chain activity from autonomous agents remains negligible—fewer than 1,000 on-chain transactions daily across all major L1s. Yet the narrative is already pricing in a future where billions of machine-to-machine payments flow through Solana, Ethereum, and their ilk.

Franklin Templeton is no newcomer to crypto. Their on-chain money market fund, launched in 2021, was a cautious step into tokenized real-world assets.
